Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the video shows a massive avalanche that hit the Nathula border area in Sikkim on 4 April.

On performing a reverse image search of the first videoā€™s keyframe, we found the same video published by Aaj Tak and News18 on YouTube three weeks ago. Both channels, in the caption, stated that the video shows an avalanche in Sikkim.

The verified YouTube channel of East Mojo published the same video on 4 April 2023. It said that an avalanche on the 13th mile on the Jawaharlal Nehru road connecting Gangtok with Nathula Pass had killed at least seven tourists and more people were feared to be trapped.

Hindustan Times tweeted the video on 4 April and said that it shows the moment when an avalanche hit Sikkim.

It also reported that at least seven people had died and more than 50 were reported to be trapped.

From this, we conclude that the video does not show an avalanche during the Amarnath Yatra in Jammu & Kashmir. The video shows an avalanche in Sikkim. Hence, the claim is misleading.
