A video showing a terrifying storm violently shaking trees and electric wires and blowing away the tin roofs of houses is going viral on social video. Those sharing the video claim that it shows the recent storm that hit the Tinsukia district of Assam. (Archived post)

The claim comes after a severe thunderstorm and hailstorm caused a trail of devastation in Tinsukia, Assam. Following this, the district administration of Tinsuika ordered all schools and colleges of the district to be closed on 24 April. Two people reportedly also lost their lives in the devastation. Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the video shows a tornado that hit two villages near Mynmmar’s capital Naypyitaw on 21 April.

On performing a reverse image search of the video’s keyframe, we found the extended version of the video published by The Weather Channel on 26 April. It said a deadly tornado hit central Myanmar, which destroyed several homes on 21 April.

Tachileik News Agency and Myanmar Now News also uploaded the video on their YouTube channels. Both reported that a strong tornado caused devastation in central Myanmar near the capital Naypyitaw on 21 April. They also said that the deadly wind claimed several lives and injured many.

Associated Press on 22 April reported that a tornado tore through Aung Myin Kone and Tadau villages on Naypyitaw’s southern outskirts and killed eight people and destroyed more than 200 houses.

From this, we conclude that the viral video shows devastation in Myanmar and not Assam’s Tinsukia. Hence, the claim is misleading.
