Hyderabad: A video showing a mob entering and looting a shop is being shared with the claim that the video is from violence-hit Manipur.

A Twitter user shared the video and wrote, ā€œBJP is a failed govt in Manipur, its responsibility of govt to save property & lives of people? Shame on BJP (sic).ā€

The claim comes after violent clashes broke out in various parts of Manipur following a protest rally by tribal groups over a High Court order on Scheduled Tribe status for Meities. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has appealed to the people to maintain peace, and the Indian Army and Central paramilitary forces have also been called in to control the situation in the state.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the video has been on the internet since February this year and is from the Philippines.

On performing a reverse image search of the videoā€™s keyframe, we found the same video published by VIC Media on 3 March. It is titled ā€œWatch Chaotic Scenes Unfold as a Clothes Store Opens in the Philippines.ā€

According to the description, the video shows pandemonium at a thrift store in Lucena City, Philippines after it opened on 24 February. It said the owner, Mildred Garcia Bundialan, was used to customersā€™ excitement whenever sheā€™d announce new arrivals, but even she was surprised at the frenzied shopping spree.

The Philippines-based media organisation, DZRH News Television, had also posted the video on its Facebook page on 3 March. It credited the video to the Facebook account Mildred Ukay Suki.

Mildred shared the video on 24 February and mentioned the location as Lucena City. According to her Facebook bio, Mildred is the owner of a store called Ukay Suki.

From this, we conclude that the video is from the Philippines and does not show looting in violence-hit Manipur. Hence, the claim is false.
