Fact Check: This video does not show TDP goons attacking women

Hyderabad: A video of a man attacking a woman with an axe while another woman tries to stop him is being circulated on social media. The video is being shared with claims that the man is a goon from the Telugu Desam Party, which recently came to power in Andhra Pradesh.

A reverse image search of the video led us to a post by an X user, which explains that the video depicts an elder brother attacking his sister with an axe over a land dispute. Sharing the video, the user wrote,“Anantapur District in Penakacherla village of Garladinne mandal, elder brother attacked his sister with an axe over a land dispute. Another woman was also attacked.”

The official X handle of Anantapur Police also posted a clarification on the case. In the post, Anantapur Rural DSP B.V. Shivareddy confirms that the Garladinne police arrested the younger brother, Jilani, for attacking his elder sister, Mahaboobi, with an axe in Penakacharla village.

On July 10, Deccan Chronicle reported on the incident with the headline "Anantapur: Man Attacks Sister with Axe Over Land Dispute." According to the report, Jilani attacks his sister on July 9 after a dispute over a house site.

NewsMeter contacted Garladinne sub inspector Gouse Mohammed Basha, who confirmed the details. Speaking to us, the inspector said, “The incident occurs on July 9 morning at 8:30 am. Jilani attacks his sister over a house site dispute after she erects a fence on the land. Jilani is now under judicial remand and has been sent to Anantapur sub-jail.” He also confirms that there is no political angle to the incident and added that Mahaboobi was treated at Anantapur General Hospital and later discharged.

Hence, the claim that the video shows TDP goons attacking women is false. The incident is a family dispute with no political connections.
