Hyderabad: A video of a flyover collapse, which shows vehicles crushed and trapped underneath a flyover, is being shared with the claim that the mishap took place in Mumbai’s Thane on 15 February 2023.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the video dates back to 2018 and shows a flyover collapse in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

We performed a reverse image search of a keyframe of the video and found the same frame in a report published by The News Minute on 24 February 2021. It said at least 18 people were killed in a flyover collapse in Varanasi in 2018.

It also said the video was viral on WhatsApp in the past, claiming that a flyover had collapsed in Balanagar, Hyderabad. When a Twitter user inquired about it, the Cyberabad police clarified that the video shows a flyover collapse in Varanasi.

A News18 report from 16 May 2018 also carried a still from the video. It reported that the incident took place at Sigra police station near Lehartara Cancer Hospital in Varanasi. It said an under-construction flyover had collapsed, and the rescue team had pulled out 18 bodies trapped underneath the collapsed structure.

Hindustan Times and The Economic Times had reported the incident in 2018 with the same details. Both reports carry stills from the video.

It is clear that the viral video is from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Hence, we conclude that the claim that the video shows a flyover collapse in Mumbai’s Thane is false.
