Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the video dates back to 2022 and is from a roadshow in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi ahead of the last phase of the state’s Assembly elections.

On performing a reverse image search of the video’s keyframe, we found a video on a verified YouTube channel from 4 May 2022. It showed Mr. Modi drinking tea and greeting people and had the same visuals as the viral video.

The video is titled “Unforgettable moments from Kashi as PM Modi enjoys a hot cup of ‘chai’ at a tea stall!

NDTV, on 4 March 2022, reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had stopped for tea during a roadshow in Varanasi while campaigning for BJP candidates ahead of the last phase of the Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh. The report also carried a video that showed the same visuals of Mr. Modi enjoying tea and greeting people.

We also found the video of the shop owner talking about Mr. Modi’s visit to his shop. It was published on 30 April 2022.

From this, we conclude that the viral video does not show PM Modi enjoying tea at a roadside tea shop during the election campaign ahead of the 2023 Karnataka Assembly polls. Hence, the claim is misleading.
