By Sunanda Naik Published on 31 March 2023 8:17 PM ISTHyderabad: A video of a snacks-manufacturing unit is circulating on social media with the claim that it shows fake cashews being made.
The claimant seems to be warning people to check cashews before buying as kaju dupes are being disguised as real kaju.
A friend of mine sent this video to have it posted. Now we have one more added problem, please check the cashews before buying. Lesson: nothing to be taken for granted. pic.twitter.com/3F9i7McA4t

āA friend of mine sent this video to have it posted. Now we have one more added problem, please check the cashews before buying. Lesson: nothing to be taken for granted,ā reads the viral tweet.
Letās see if the claim is legit.
Fact Check
NewsMeter found the claim to be false as the video is from a kaju biscuit-manufacturing unit.
While we were analysing the post, we found a comment by a Twitter user clearing the misinformation. The user wrote, āThese arenāt fake cashews. These are biscuits shaped like cashews. Thatās a sheet of rolled dough passing through the stencil which cuts the it into cashews. Looks like a small scale, local business. You canāt replicate the colour, feel, texture and taste of cashew so easily.ā

Taking this as a cue, we ran a keyword search and found multiple similar videos of kaju biscuit manufacturing plants on YouTube. The title of the video clearly indicates that these are traditional kaju-shaped cookies being sold in the market and made at homes for years. (Click here and here to watch the videos.)
These kaju biscuits are also sold online.
We conclude that the viral video shows cashew-shaped biscuits, which are very popular in north India, being made, not fake cashews. Hence, the claim is false.
