Hyderabad: A viral advertisement claims that Tourmaline Lymphvity Slimming Health Socks help shed pounds in just three weeks.

The caption states that acupressure and foot reflex zone therapy accelerates metabolism and improve back pain, headaches, fatigue, anxiety, cholesterol, and stress. They force the body to burn more calories, treat varicose veins, increase physical energy, and improve digestive health.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the claim is false.

We contacted our expert, Dr. Narendranadh Meda, consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon at KIMS Hospital, to debunk the claim.

He said there is no proof that Tourmaline Lymphatic slimming socks help in weight loss.

ā€œTourmaline therapy uses negative ions created when heated crystals come into contact with the skin and activate cells in order to improve circulation. Magnetic therapy works by stimulating blood flow to create a healing environment,ā€ Dr. Meda said.

He added, ā€œOver the years, several studies have been conducted to determine the efficacy of tourmaline-based healthcare products. While the results do not definitively prove that tourmaline can improve circulation or reduce pain, they suggest that it does have potential for these benefits. A 2004 study published in the International Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Technology noted improved nerve function in diabetic patients who wore tourmaline-lined socks. Another study from 2009 found that tourmaline could be effective for relieving foot pain due to its infrared radiation properties.ā€

However, there is no proof that it helps in weight loss.
