Fact Check: Trumps tweet declaring martial law is fake

Hyderabad: An image that purports to show a screenshot of a tweet by US President Donald Trump from December 18 2020 declaring he has invoked martial law has gone viral on social media.

The tweet reads: "Under the Insurrection Act I have declared Martial Law. This was an attempted coup. Arrest are being carried out all over the nation. Biden has surrendered his passport. More to come!"

Fact Check:

NewsMeter found that the claim is FALSE and Trump has not tweeted declaring martial law.

We searched the official account of Donald Trump and found no such tweet. Also, no major media outlets has reported the same.

In a tweet from 20 December 2020, Trump dismissed claims of implementing martial law. The tweet read: "Martial law = Fake News. Just more knowingly bad reporting!"

A Google reverse image search of the tweet led to a photo on the website Alamy. The photo caption read, "An FBI agent escorts one of the police officers and prison guards arrested in a major anti-corruption operation across the U.S. Caribbean territory following his first court appearance at the Puerto Rico Federal Court Building in San Juan, October 6, 2010."


Evidently, the claim is FALSE as the tweet is fake and no such official statement was made by the US President Donald Trump.
