Recently, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake, which followed a powerful 7.8 magnitude quake that rocked wide swaths of Turkey and Syria, hit Turkey on 6 February 2023, toppling hundreds of buildings and killing more than 35,000 people.
Amidst the chaos, misinformation and fake news about Turkey earthquake are rampant on social media. Photos from earlier earthquakes are circulating with the claim that they are from the recent disaster in Turkey and Syria.
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the photo of the old man is not from Turkey.
On performing a simple keyword search, we found the same photo published by CNN Turk in November 2022 after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit Düzce, a town in northern Turkey.
The same image was uploaded by researcher Sidika Tekeli-Yesil in her study titled āThe determinants of information seeking behaviour and paying attention to earthquake related informationā in July 2020.
We also found another media report which had used the same picture. It confirmed that the photo was taken during the 1999 earthquake.
Hence, the claim that the photo is from the recent Turkey earthquake is false.
