Fact Check: Video from South Korea shared as Hamas militants flying into high-voltage power line

Hyderabad: A video showing a paraglider crashing into a high-voltage electric power line and bursting into flames is viral on social media. Those sharing the video claim it shows Hamas militants crashing into electricity poles in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

An X premium user shared the video with the caption, “NEW EPIC FAIL FOOTAGE: Hamas paraglider crashes into a high-voltage electric power line and bursts into flames. Did he deserve it, YES or NO? (sic)”

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the viral video was from South Korea. It is not related to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

Upon a reverse image search of the video’s keyframe, we found it on X, posted on June 17, 2023, four months before the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

We also found the video on a South Korean website called bobaedream. According to the website, on June 16, 2023, a tourist aged around sixty years who was paragliding crashed on a high-voltage wire near Seopjikoji Beach, Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do in South Korea.

Another South Korean website v.daum.net published a report about the fatal accident with the same details on June 17, 2023.

Hence, we conclude that the video is from South Korea and does not show Hamas militants crashing into a high-voltage wire in the ongoing conflict with Israel. The claim is false.
