A video showing the collapse of a bridge is viral on social media. Users claim that the video shows the collapse of a newly constructed metro bridge in India.
A Twitter user shared the video with the caption, “India's newly constructed overhead metro…”
NewsMeter found that the video is from Bangkok, Thailand, and not India.
We extracted the keyframes of the video and performed a reverse image search. It led us to a Singapore-based YouTube channel, which published the same video stating that the incident took place in the Lat Krabang district of Bangkok.
A report by Bangkok Post from July 12, 2023, said that in preliminary investigations, it was found that heavy equipment lifting a concrete segment caused the collapse of an elevated road under construction on Luang Phaeng Road, which killed two people and injured 12 others.
The last few frames in the video show a petrol bunk by the name “Ptt Station” and a board outside the bunk with “Ochaya” written on it. Ochaya is a Thailand-based tea brand.
Taking these cues, we searched for the “Ptt station” on Luang Phaeng Road and found the exact location of the viral video on Google Maps. A comparison between the visual seen in the video and the Street View of the location.
Hence, we conclude that the viral video is from Bangkok and does not show the metro bridge collapsing in India. The claim is false.
