A disturbing video of boys assaulting a hijab-clad classmate is viral on social media. Users claim it shows a Muslim girl tortured by non-Muslim classmates.

An X user shared the video with the caption, “See how Hijabi girl is treated in school &college's it is a pity that few Muslim people still support this re-education system, it is a pity that non-Muslim people always torture Muslim girls.”

Fact Check

NewsMeter probe found that the incident happened in Purworejo, Indonesia, in 2020.

On performing a reverse image search of the video’s keyframe, we found a video report showing the same visuals by the Indonesia-based verified YouTube Channel Tribunnews.

As per the description of the video, the incident took place in a private school in Purworejo, Indonesia, and three boys who were assaulting the girl have been arrested.

An article by the Tribunnews said that the incident took place at Muhammadiya Need Middle School in Purworejo, Indonesia (SMP Muhammadiya Butuh Purworejo). The three boys who were seen bullying and assaulting the girl were arrested.

NewsMeter could not independently verify the religion of the perpetrators and the victim. However, we could verify that the video is from Indonesia, not India. Hence, we conclude that the claim is false.
