Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the claim is false. The video is from Vietnam, not Bengaluru.

Through a reverse image search of the video, we found it shared by an X account on October 16, 2024, with the caption ā€˜Vietnamā€™. This hinted at a possible origin of the video outside India.

Further, a keyword search led us to multiple reports from Vietnamese news outlets. VietnamPlus, a local media outlet, published an article titled, ā€˜Shocking scene of broken power line falling onto flooded street in Can Tho,ā€™ on October 16, 2024. The report contained the video under investigation.

The report detailed the scenario leading to the incident in the viral video. It confirmed that the incident took place in Can Tho, a city in Vietnam. The report explained that during a heavy storm, a high-voltage power line snapped and fell on a street submerged in floodwater. The power line then began to emit sparks, creating a dangerous spectacle.

Another Vietnamese news site, Afamily, also covered the incident on October 16, 2024.

Their report, titled ā€˜Horrifying clip of broken electric wire falling onto flooded road, sparks flying everywhereā€™, described how the heavy rain, along with thunder and lightning, caused the power line to snap.

In the video, people can be heard shouting warnings as electric sparks spread across the flooded road. Bystanders drove vehicles through a dry section of the street, avoiding the flooded area where the electric wire was sparking.

A report by Tuoi Tre News, titled ā€˜Hours-long rain leaves streets underwater in Vietnamā€™s Can Thoā€™, published on October 15, 2024, confirmed that the city experienced severe flooding due to heavy rainfall.

The report discussed how streets were submerged for hours, creating dangerous conditions, including incidents like the power line short circuit captured in the viral video.
