Video of Malaysian man draping saree to woman shared with communal twist

A Facebook user has shared a video claiming that it shows a Muslim man draping a saree over a Hindu woman. The user also said that it is the Hindu women only who are destroying the Hindu religion. He further claimed that earlier Muslim men used to tie turbans at weddings; now they also drape saree to Hindu women.

Several other Facebook users have also claimed the same.

NewsMeter found that the video shows a Malaysian man, Joseph Jerry, who is a saree specialist, draping a saree over a woman.

On performing a reverse image search, we found the same video published on YouTube by a channel called ViVi TV on 13 July 2019. The video is titled “How to Wear a Saree Simple Steps l Simple Tips to Drape a Saree - Video for Women.”

The description states that the Malaysian saree man Joseph Jerry shows the simple steps to drape the saree.

We also found another video on YouTube published on 11 May 2019, which shows Joseph Jerry draping a saree to another woman.

The description reads, “How I watched Joseph Jerry, the Malaysian Saree man, drape the saree effortlessly within 3 minutes for one of the models during Zobha’s fashion show

Further, we found Joseph Jerry posted pictures of the nineteen models whom he draped saree for the Zobha fashion show in 2019. In one of the pictures, we identified the same woman wearing the same saree as seen in the viral photo.

We also found a video in which the same woman in the same saree can be seen walking in the fashion show organized by the Zobha — a Malaysian-based textile manufacturing company.

We also came across a 2018 article on the Malaysian news website The Star about tips by Malaysian Sari man Joseph on how to drape a saree.

From these findings, we conclude viral video does not show a Muslim man draping the saree of a Hindu woman at a wedding. Hence, the claim is misleading.
