Fact Check: Video of man attacking a girl in Colombia shared with communal spin

Hyderabad: A deeply disturbing video of a girl laying in a pool of blood, and subsequent frames showing a man being apprehended by the security forces is doing the rounds on social media.

It also shows a floating screenshot of Jagran’s article titled “Jabalpur Murder Case: Lover slits girlfriend’s throat after being cheated in love, murder case in Mekhla resort.”

A Twitter user shared the video and wrote, “In Jabalpur, a Muslim lover made a Hindu girl a victim of his lust. While he was cutting her into pieces, the hotel staff and police caught him. We had warned the girl many times, but she was adamant that her Abdul was not like others. However, this Abdul also turned out to be a murderer. (Translated from Hindi)”

A Facebook user also shared the same video claiming the same.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the video is from 2022 and the incident occurred in Columbia, and not India.

We noticed the word ‘Policia’ written on the vest of a security officer in the video and also noticed that the audio was not in sync with the video. It gave us the cue that the video could be from another country.

On performing a reverse image search of the video’s keyframe, we came across a report by Colombia News from November 16, 2022. It carried the image of the same man who is seen apprehended in the video.

The report identified the victim as Milena Patricia Altamar Ojeda (21), who was assaulted by his former partner, Jesús Salvador Tovar García (27), in the middle of a conciliation hearing taking place in a House of Justice in Barranquilla.

Another report by Impacto News from November 17, 2022, said the Atlantic Sectional Prosecutor’s Office prosecuted Jesús Salvador Tovar for brutally attacking his former partner with a knife in the middle of a conciliation hearing.

The report carried the same image of the accused and a blurred image of the victim being carried on a stretcher.

We also came across a video tweeted by MiTvCanal20 from November 16, 2022. It showed Jesús Salvador Tovar being arrested by the police.

“In the ‘House of Justice’ in the ‘La Paz’ neighbourhood of Barranquilla, a man stabbed his former partner in the middle of a ‘Conciliation Hearing.’ According to witnesses, Jesús Salvador Tocar García and Milena Patricia Altamar Ojeda arrived at the place to reconcile,” the video is captioned.

Hence, we conclude that the video is not from Jabalpur and is being shared with a communal spin.
