Fact Check

NewsMeter found that both leaders were mistakenly sitting on each other’s chairs during a UPA meeting at the PM’s residence. After the SPG intervention, they sat in their assigned chairs.

On performing a reverse image search, we found a video report by India TV from 14 December 2011. It said during a UPA meeting at the PM’s residence, then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sat on the chair assigned to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and the latter sat on the chair assigned to the PM.

After the SPG officials noticed the mistake, they first requested Sonia Gandhi to vacate the PM’s chair and asked Manmohan Singh to shift to his chair.

From this, we conclude that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi who were under SPG security had inadvertently swapped their chairs. Hence, the claim is false.
