Hyderabad: A video of young men tied to a rope and paraded shirtless in public is making rounds on social media. The accompanying claim suggests that people from the Muslim community, who threw stones at the houses of Hindus and threatened them on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha on June 17, were paraded shirtless in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
“In Indore, MP, Abdul and his companions threw stones at the houses of Hindus on Eid and started threatening them. CM Mohan Yadav’s police beat up Abdul Gang in the police station, stripped them half naked, tied them with a rope and brought them to the same place where stones were thrown! Many thanks to Indore Police for this strict action! (translated from Hindi)” wrote an X user who shared the video. (Archive)
The name ‘Abdul’ is popularly used among right-wing handles in a derogatory way while referring to men from the Muslim community.
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the claim is misleading. The incident, which occurred in 2023 in MP’s Indore, was the result of a conflict within the Muslim community.
Upon conducting a reverse image search of the video’s keyframe, we found an X post from September 9, 2023, featuring the viral video and a police statement.
In the video, the officer stated that the scuffle was an internal dispute between individuals with past criminal records in the Sadar Bazar area of Indore. The officer said that cases have been filed against both sides and the accused will be produced before the court. The officer named the accused as Zubair, Mohsin Qureshi, Masroof, Mohammad Azmat, Imran, Moeen Qureshi, Waseem and Shahrukh.
We also found reports from India TV and ETV Bharat on the incident, published in September 2023. These reports included the viral video of men being paraded shirtless. Both reports mentioned that an internal dispute had led to stone-pelting in Indore’s Sadar Bazaar.
The police arrested the offenders from both sides and paraded them half-naked as a public example. The reports also mentioned the accused: Zubair, Mohsin Qureshi, Masroof, Mohammad Azmat, Imran, Moeen Qureshi, Waseem, and Shahrukh.
Moreover, the incident occurred during Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s tenure as chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. Mohan Yadav became the chief minister in December 2023, whereas the incident took place in September 2023.
Hence, we conclude that the video is from 2023 and has been misleadingly shared as a ‘punishment’ for Muslims accused of stone pelting on Hindu homes on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha on June 17, 2024.
