Hyderabad: A disturbing video of a group of men ruthlessly beating a man with sticks and, what seems like a boulder, is going viral on social media. Users are linking it to the ongoing communal strife in Haryana’s Mewat.

A Twitter user shared the video (trigger warning: viewer discretion advised) with the caption, “If what’s happening in Mewat doesn’t wake you up, then one day your end is also going to be like this. (Translated from Hindi)”

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the incident took place in Bangladesh in 2017.

We extracted keyframes of the video and performed a reverse image search, and found it on Facebook, posted in 2017. The user mentioned in the caption that the video shows a person, accused of the murder of Chairman Monir, being beaten to death.

Taking this as a cue, we ran a relevant keyword search and came across a report from April 3, 2017, by a Bangladesh-based news outlet, BD24 Live. As per the report, Abu Saeed and Mohammad Ali were attacked near Jiarkandi Bridge in Gouripur Bazaar on their way to Titas Upazila. Saeed died on the way to the hospital, and Ali was severely injured.

It also mentioned that both were named accused in the murder case of UP Chairman Monir Hossain Sarkar, the previous year.

Another Bangaladesh-based news outlet Comillar Kagoj reported the incident on April 2, 2017, with the same details. It added that the victims were attacked during a traffic jam on the south bank of Gomti Bailey Bridge in the upazila.

Hence, we conclude that the video shows the incident that happened in Bangladesh in 2017.
