A video of a policeman hitting a rickshaw driver while he was pulling his loaded cart is being shared with the claim of police atrocity in Gujarat.
The claim comes amidst the ongoing assembly election in Gujarat.
A Facebook user indirectly targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared the video and wrote, "When sir comes, the labourers and poor people are betrayed. Only by voting against the BJP's dictatorship, they can be removed and Gujarat can be saved ā¦" (Translated)
Another Facebook user shared the video and made the same claim. (Click here to see the post.)
Fact Check
NewMeter carefully watched the video and noticed 'Patna' written in an advertisement hoarding standing by the side of the road.
Taking this as a cue, we ran a keyword search in Hindi and found the same video published by the verified YouTube channel of the Navbharat Times. It said that the video is reportedly from Bihar. After the video went viral on Twitter, people called out the police's insensitivity towards the poor and questioned Bihar Chief Minister over the conduct of the police.
Further, we also found the video tweeted by Journalist Anand Singh on 26 November. He tweeted that the incident took place in front of his eyes at Bahadurpur bridge in Rajendra Nagar, Patna.
Dear @bihar_police can you justify this act of your men in uniform?
This happened infront of my eyes at Rajendranagar Bahdurpur Bridge in Patna just few minutes ago.
When I asked, why they beat the rickshawpuller, your men were more keen to know who we are and why we filmed? pic.twitter.com/bn1Sai0qiE
The Hindi newspaper Hindustan also reported on the incident on 29 November. It said that the incident happened on 26 November and a car driver recorded the video at Bahadurpur Bridge in Rajendra Nagar, Patna.
It is evident that the video of police hitting a rickshaw puller is from Patna, the capital of Bihar. Hence, the claim that the video is from Gujarat is misleading.
