Fact Check: Video of TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh 'disrespectfully' asking Amit Shah to sit down in parliament is edited

Social media users are sharing a video of TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar addressing Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a seemingly disrespectful manner. “You do not know anything, and you must sit down,” she can be heard saying. The clip then shifts to her speech, which focuses on the rising LPG gas prices.

Taking a ‘Tadipar’ jibe at Shah, an X user shared the video and wrote, “We strongly condemn publicly reprimanding the outcast in such a manner.” (Translated from Hindi) (Archive)

NewsMeter found that the claim is false as two unrelated video clips were merged to create the impression of a heated exchange between Dastidar and Amit Shah.

Clip 1 of Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar

Upon conducting a reverse image search of the video’s keyframe, we found around a 14-minute video published on Sansad TV on August 1, 2022, titled “Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar | Discussion under Rule 193 on price rise.”

The video shows Dastidar speaking on inflation, criticizing the government’s Ujjwala Yojana, highlighting that women in villages cannot afford to refill the LPG cylinders after receiving them initially. She also questions if people are expected to eat raw vegetables, such as chewing on raw eggplant, as seen in the viral video.

At the 12:36-minute mark, the video shows visuals of Dastidar chiding a fellow parliamentarian, saying, “You do not know anything, and you must sit down.” However, the subsequent frames do not depict Amit Shah being scolded by Dastidar, as depicted in the viral video.

A reverse image search of Shah’s clip led us to another video published by NDTV on February 7, 2022, titled “Amit Shah’s Appeal to AIMIM's Asaduddin Owaisi: ‘Accept Z Security.’”

The identical visuals of MPs seated beside Amit Shah and of him sitting down at the end of the speech, as seen in the viral video, also appear in this video.

We also found identical visuals in the video published by Sansad TV on the same day, titled “Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement in Rajya Sabha over attack on convoy of Asaduddin Owaisi.”

Hence, we conclude two separate video clips, one featuring Dastidar and the other Shah, have been merged to create the impression of a heated exchange between the two.
