Fact Check: Video of a woman suffering from ovarian cancer shared with false claim

Hyderabad: A video of an Asian woman with a huge belly is claimed to have given birth to 9 babies. The video is viral on social media.

An X user shared the video with the caption, ā€˜Living with 9 babies for 9 months! Mothers are the most magnificent creatures in the world. But it is not clear whether the dad is crying from joy or sadness.ā€™

In the viral video, you can see a woman carrying a huge belly and seemingly in pain in a hospital. A few seconds later, a queue of 9 babies was seen to show that the woman delivered them.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the claim is false.

On performing a reverse image search using the keyframes from the viral video, we found an article on Daily Mail carrying the stills from the video titled, 'Chinese mother-of-two, 36, whose belly ballooned by 88 pounds due to ovarian cancer undergoes surgeryā€™.

According to the report, a Chinese woman has undergone high-risk surgery after her belly expanded 'uncontrollably' in the past two years due to ovarian cancer. ā€˜Mother-of-two Huang Guoxian's abdomen ballooned by nearly 40 kilograms (88 pounds) after it was filled with fluid and tumors of different sizesā€™, the report said quoting the doctors. Fifteen medical workers teamed up to remove the lumps and liquid from the 36-year-old during an eight-hour operation. ā€˜The hospital has informed the local reporters this week that the procedure was a successā€™, the report said.

Moreover, we also found the same report published on media outlets such as Deccan Herald and TimesNowNews.com as well.

Hence, it is evident that the viral video showing a woman apparently pregnant with 9 babies was actually suffering from ovarian cancer.

What is ovarian cancer?

According to CDC, ā€˜Ovarian cancer is a group of diseases that originates in the ovaries, or in the related areas of the fallopian tubes and the peritoneum. Women have two ovaries that are located in the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus. The ovaries make female hormones and produce eggs for reproduction. Women have two fallopian tubes that are a pair of long, slender tubes on each side of the uterus. Eggs pass from the ovaries through the fallopian tubes to the uterus. The peritoneum is the tissue lining that covers organs in the abdomen.ā€™

ā€˜When ovarian cancer is found in its early stages, treatment works best. Ovarian cancer often causes signs and symptoms, so it is important to pay attention to your body and know what is normal for you.ā€™, it adds.

Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer may include:

Abdominal bloating or swelling

Quickly feeling full when eating

Weight loss

Discomfort in the pelvic area

Fatigue

Back pain

Changes in bowel habits, such as constipation

A frequent need to urinate

Make an appointment with your doctor if you have any signs or symptoms that worry you.
