Hyderabad: An audio clip of a man claiming an increase in traffic violation fines is circulating on WhatsApp. The man claims that speed guns have been installed at all traffic signals in Hyderabad and the fine for signal jumping has been increased from Rs. 1,035 to Rs. 1,635. He also claims he paid a fine of Rs. 4,500 for over-speeding for his three vehicles.
NewsMeter received the audio on its WhatsApp tipline number (7482830440).
NewsMeter found that there has been no increase in fines for signal jumping and over-speeding in Hyderabad.
We checked the website of the Hyderabad traffic police and found that the fine for signal jumping is Rs. 1,000 for two, three, four, and six-wheelers and for over-speeding, it is Rs. 1,400 for any vehicle.
Speaking to NewsMeter, e-challan officer M. Narsing Rao said no new speed guns have been installed and they have already been fitted on cameras at more than 25 locations. He also confirmed that there has been no increase in fines for signal jumping and over-speeding.
Hence, we conclude that the claim that fines for traffic violations in Hyderabad have been hiked is false.
