The claim that the person in chains is Father Stan is FALSE.
When we performed a reverse image search of the image shared, we found that it is from Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred in May 2021 when a jail official chained a 92-year-old prisoner to his hospital bed during the treatment.
After Father Stan Swamy's demise, several media websites posted the image of him. So when we crosschecked, the image was not that of Stan Swamy.
According to the report from NDTV, Baburam Balwan Singh (92), a convicted murderer, was lodged at the district jail of Etah, Uttar Pradesh. He was admitted to the hospital due to breathing problems when the image was taken.
After a picture was posted on social media, UP Additional Director General (Jail), Anand Kumar ordered warder Ashok Yadav's suspension and sought clarification from his supervisory officer.
According to India today, a 92-year-old man was tied to his hospital bed in Uttar Pradesh's Etah district. The elderly, a jail inmate, was brought to the District Women's Hospital by the prison authorities as he was suffering from shortness of breath due to a non-Covid ailment.
As soon as the matter came to light, DG Jail Anand Kumar suspended Ashok Yadav, the warden of the jail where the elderly is serving his sentence. The superintendent of the Etah jail also directed the hospital authorities to immediately remove the chain.
Therefore, an image of a 92-year-old prisoner in a Hospital from Uttar Pradesh is being shared as that of 84-year-old Stan Swamy, who died in prison. The claim is FALSE.
