Screengrab of the Facebook post.

Hyderabad: A Facebook post has claimed that billionaire businessman and co-founder of Infosys, Narayana Murthy, has launched a trading platform for Indian citizens. The post claimed to quote him as saying, “This is a trading platform that will help every citizen of India have a STABLE PASSIVE INCOME! (sic)”

The post carried a link reportedly to an Indian Express article titled “BREAKING NEWS: People are shocked by the latest Narayana Murthy project. Indian Banks horrified!!!” It also claimed that anyone can have a daily passive income by investing 250$ in Murthy’s trading platform.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the information on Narayana Murthy launching a trading platform is fake news.

We started our investigation by checking the link to the purported Indian Express article. On clicking the link, it directed us to a blank webpage and not to the website of the Indian Express.

We also noticed that the URL of the article ‘https://indian-expresslive.com/’ is different from the official Indian Express website. https://indianexpress.com is the official URL for Indian Express, which confirms that the previous link is fake.

We also found the website’s domain was registered to ‘indian-expresslive.com’ on June 2, 2023, under the name ‘NameCheap, Inc.’. This confirmed that the webpage is not associated with The Indian Express.

Finally, we ran a keyword search about Murthy launching a trading platform, but could not find any such report published by The Indian Express or any other reputable media publication.

The Indian Express, in a tweet on September 4, 2021, debunked a similar claim reported by a dubious website that claimed that Azim Premji is urging people to invest in Bitcoin.

Similarly, in April and July this year, NewsMeter fact-checked a similar claim about Nandan Nilekani investing $892 million and Gautam Adani investing Rs 892 million in a new platform to make ordinary people rich.

Hence, we caution our readers about fake news about billionaire industrialists investing or launching trading platforms that go viral again and again to fool people.
