Hyderabad: Following the death of Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Group, on October 9, 2024, at the age of 86, many mourned his passing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on X, praising Tata as a āvisionary business leaderā and reminiscing about their meetings in Gujarat. In this context, a viral video began circulating online, attributing the quote āI donāt take right decisions, I take decisions and make them rightā to Tata.
A Threads user shared the video with the caption, āI donāt believe in taking right decisions, I take decisions and then make them right. An inspiring line by Ratan Tata. We will miss you a lot. Om Shanti,ā showing footage of a vehicle purportedly carrying Tataās body.
The same claim can be seen shared here and here.
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the claim is false. Ratan Tata had said that he never made the viral statement.
A keyword search revealed a 2022 video interview with Business Today, titled, āRatan Tata Clears the Air on a Quote Attributed to him, Narrates Decision-Making Challenges.ā At the beginning of the video, Tata can be seen clearly stating that he never made such a statement, explaining that it was a fabrication, possibly from Facebook or Twitter.
According to the videoās caption, āāI donāt believe in taking right decisions, I take decisions and make them right,ā is a statement that Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Trusts & Chairman Emeritus, Tata Sons denied making at a special ceremony in HEC Paris in April 2015. He was awarded an HEC Paris honoris causa degree in 2015, making him the first industry leader from Asia to be awarded such a distinction from HEC Paris.ā
Ratan Tata and his leadership at the Tata Group, a multinational corporation employing over 660,000 people with annual revenues exceeding $100 billion, has been recognised globally. However, it is clear that the viral quote has been wrongly attributed to him.
Hence, the claim that Ratan Tata made the statement, āI donāt take right decisions, I take decisions and make them right,ā is false.
