On July 15, during the Republican National Convention (RNC), former American President Donald Trump announced Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his vice-presidential candidate. Both Trump and Vance were officially nominated by the RNC. Following the nomination, Vance, accompanied by his wife Usha Vance, who has Indian roots, greeted the delegates at the convention.
Amid this, a video has been circulating on social media showing Vance greeting attendees at the RNC with chants of ‘India-India’ in the background.
Sharing the video, an X user wrote, “'India India' chants as JD Vance brings soon-to-be second lady Usha Chilukuri into the RNC convention.” (Archive)
NewsMeter found the claim false as the viral clip was edited. The chants of ‘India-India’ have been digitally inserted.
We conducted a keyword search on YouTube and found the same visuals as the viral clip in a video published by The Wall Street Journal on July 16 titled “Watch: J.D. Vance Is Nominated as Vice Presidential Nominee at the RNC.”
The video depicts the announcement of Vance as the Vice Presidential nominee, followed by him and his wife, Usha, greeting the attendees at the convention. Contrary to viral claims, we did not hear chants of ‘India-India’ in this version of the video. Instead, the country band Sixwire performed as Vance’s nomination was announced.
We also found the RNC live-streamed Forbes on its YouTube channel on July 15. The viral clip appears in this video at the three-hour timestamp, with Sixwire playing in the background.
Hence, we conclude that the viral clip of Vance greeting attendees at the RNC amidst chants of ‘India-India’ is edited. The video shows Vance greeting attendees at the RNC amidst chants of ‘India-India’.
