Hyderabad: A disturbing video of a man being attacked by a crocodile is circulating on social media with the claim that it is from India. In the video, a crocodile can be seen dragging a motionless body of a man who is lying face down in the water and is semi-nude and unconscious.
A Facebook user posted the video without any caption. However, the Hindi text in the video suggests it is from Bhagalpur in Bihar.
A YouTube channel called "Arshad Mahmood" posted the same video on 25 August 2022. The channel claims the video is from Gandhisagar dam on the Chambal river.
Fact Check
NewsMeter carried out a reverse image search of the keyframes of the video and found an article published by Mexico News Daily carrying a cover image similar to the keyframes. According to the article, the man was killed by a crocodile while swimming in Laguna del Carpintero in the city of Tampico. Tampico is a city and port in the southeastern part of the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. The article also said the body of the unidentified man was recovered and the crocodile was captured.
Taking a cue from this, we ran a keyword search and found a Spanish article reporting the incident. It said the incident occurred when the man went swimming inside the Laguna del Carpintero in Tampico. The article has a tweet embedded that carries the viral video. The tweet also states that the man was killed by a crocodile in Carpintero Lagoon in Tampico, Mexico.
It is evident that the viral video of a crocodile attacking a man is not from India. Hence, the claim is false.
