Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the video is indeed from the G7 Summit held in Hiroshima. However, the viral video has been clipped. The extended version of the video shows French President Emmanuel Macron and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida interacting with PM Modi before and after the group photograph.

We ran a keyword search about the G7 Summit and came across a 4-hour long video of the Summit live-streamed on the YouTube channel of The Independent on 20 May. It is titled “Live: G7 leaders and guest countries pose for family photo in Japan.” At around the 1.47-hour mark, Mr. Macron can be seen patting Mr. Modi and escorting him towards the stage. After the photography session, at around the 1.49-hour mark, Mr. Modi and Mr. Kishida can be seen holding hands and interacting with each other while leaving the stage.

Next, we checked the official website of the G7 Summit and found pictures of Mr. Macron greeting Mr. Modi on the stage.

We also found a picture of Mr. Macron interacting with Mr. Modi on the stage published by Getty Images on 20 May.

A short video published by ANI on 20 May also shows Mr. Modi and Mr. Kishida holding hands and interacting with each other while leaving the stage.

Hence, we conclude that a clipped video which does not show the full context is being shared with the false claim that PM Modi was ignored by the leaders at G7 Hiroshima Summit 2023.
