HYDERABAD: A video of police beating a man wrapped in bandages is viral on WhatsApp.

Users claim that Madhya Pradesh police are arresting a Muslim who threw stones at the Ramanavami rally.

"Madhya Pradesh police are taking a procession in honor of the jihadi who threw stones at the Sri Ramanavami rally in MP yesterday," reads the text of the video.

Netizens are further comparing this situation to Telangana and asking the Chief Minister if he could take the same action "against those who created sectarian strife."

FACT CHECK:

A tweet published by Free Press Journal (FPJ) on April 09, 2022, shows the same man attacking a police constable in the Aerodrome area of Indore. A report by FPJ states that the police constable who was posted at Gandhi Nagar police station in the city was on his way home for lunch when his bike accidentally touched the accused, Dinesh. This led to an argument and the matter escalated. The accused then took the constable's stick and beat him up leading to several injuries. Later a complaint was lodged against the accused.

Later, the police arrested the man. The accused was also paraded in the area where he had beaten the policeman.

The viral video was taken out of context from this incident. Moreover, the accused is not a Muslim. His name (Dinesh Prajapati) indicates that he is a Hindu.

It is clear that the viral video does not show police beating and arresting a man for throwing stones at the Ramanavami procession.
