Fact Check: Viral video shows air strike in Ukraine, not Hezbollah attack on Israel

A Facebook user shared the video with the caption, “Northern Israel is reportedly under attack from Hezbollah rockets. From the footage at least some of the rockets have bypassed the iron dome... Secretary Austin has ordered the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN Carrier Strike Group, equipped with F-35C fighters, to accelerate its transit to the Central Command area of responsibility, adding to the capabilities already provided by the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT Carrier Strike Group. NewsMeter found that the claim is false. The video is from August 2023.

A reverse image search traced the video back to a report by the BBC titled, ‘Ukraine will not go unpunished, Russia says after drone attacks’ published on August 30, 2023. The video was titled, ‘Missile debris explodes over Kyiv.’

This indicated that the video was not from Israel.

The report mentioned that a massive fireball illuminated the night sky over the capital as Ukraine’s air defence intercepted a missile. The debris from the missile struck several buildings.

The report stated, ‘Russia says attacks on its soil will not go “unpunished”, after drone attacks hit six different regions overnight. The foreign ministry blamed Ukraine and claimed attacks so deep inside Russia would have required intelligence from the West.’

A keyword search revealed a video report by DW titled, ‘Massive missile and drone attack on Kyiv kills at least 2,’ on August 30, 2023.

According to the report, Ukraine said that an overnight attack of Russian missiles and drones resulted in the deaths of at least two people in Kyiv.

Hence, the claim that the video shows an attack by Hezbollah on Israel is false. Instead, it showed a military strike inside Ukraine’s Kyiv in August 2023.
