Vizianagaram: The Vizianagaram police have cracked the mystery behind the murder of a 17-year-old-youngster in the district and arrested five persons on Friday. The teenager was murdered because he had rejected a man's proposal to marry his sister and had also objected to another man's affairs with his mother.

The arrested persons have been identified as V. Suresh (33), S. Sankara Rao (25), M. Somulu (40), P. and Sankar (38) of Sarika village under Vizianagaram district and G. Jagadeesh (38) of Vizag city.

B. Pavan Kumar, a carpenter and a resident of Sarika village, went missing on 8 May. His mother B. Latha, a widow, suspected that her son might have been kidnapped and filed a complaint with the Vizianagaram Rural police. They registered a missing case and started an investigation.

On 27 July, a decomposed body of a man and a motorbike were found in a well near Sarika village. Based on the clothes on the body and the motorbike, Latha identified the dead man as her son Pavan.

The investigation revealed that the prime accused, Suresh, was in love with Pavan's 14-year-old sister and wanted to marry her. Also, one of the accused, Jagadeesh, had an illicit affair with Pavan's mother.

When Pavan and Latha refused Suresh's proposal saying the girl is a minor, Suresh asked Jagadeesh to convince Pavan and his mother. However, Pavan came to know about the affair between Jagadeesh and his mother and warned Jagadeesh from visiting their home.

Suresh and Jagadeesh then hired three men, including Pavan's friend Sankara Rao, and paid them Rs. 20,000 to kill Pavan.

On 8 May, Pavan asked Suresh for a loan of Rs. 2,000 for some urgent work. Suresh gave him Rs. 1,000 and asked him to come to an isolated place in the evening to get the remaining Rs. 1,000.

When Pavan went to the place on his motorbike in the evening, Sankara Rao and two others were waiting for him. They beat Pavan to death and later packed his body in a gunny bag and dumped it in a well.

The Vizianagaram DSP, P. Anil, said the prime accused confessed to the crime and surrendered. Based on his confession, the police arrested the other four persons, he added.
