Fact Check

NewsMeter performed a keyword search and found the same report published on The Smattering. We found that the viral report was written by Jeff Charles. The report, published on 19 December 2022, is titled "Elon Musk to Appoint Donald Trump Jr. as New Twitter CEO After Stepping Down."

We also found that while Elon Musk has talked about stepping down as Twitter CEO, but it was done as a joke. On 19 December, Musk conducted a poll on Twitter asking people if he should step down as the head of Twitter. A majority of people voted for him to step down.

But on 21 December 2022, Musk replied to his tweet saying, "I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job! After that, I will just run the software & servers teams."

We checked Jeff Charles' Twitter and found that his channel The Smattering is a satirical news channel. He has also pinned a tweet on his Twitter page announcing that he has launched his first substack page "The Smattering." The tagline for The Smattering is "The hottest news that ain't true, but totally could be," suggesting it posts satirical news articles.

Many social media users, however, seem to have believed The Smattering's satirical article about Elon Musk stepping down as Twitter CEO and appointing Donald Trump Jr.

Hence, the claim is false.
