Fire mishap at Vizag Port Trust

Visakhapatnam: In yet another fire mishap at Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT), a crane was damaged after it caught fire while loading cargo onto a merchant's vessel in the EQ-7 berth on Sunday night. However, no casualties were reported. An electrical short-circuit in the engine of the crane is suspected to have caused the fire. The merchant's vessel was immediately shifted to another berth. The VPT fire float, shore fire tenders and water tankers were rushed to the spot and the flames were brought under control. Incidentally, this is the second fire to be reported from VPT in the past month.

A few weeks ago, a crane was gutted in a fire while loading cargo onto the merchant vessel, Yasa Falcon in the WQ-1 berth of VPT. An electrical short circuit was the reason for the fire and the property loss in the incident was over Rs six crores. Fortunately, there were no casualties in the incident.
