Five died, one critical after consuming surgical spirit in Vizag

Vishakapatnam: Five persons died while another is battling for life after they consumed surgical spirit at Kasimkota in Visakhapatnam district on Sunday.

Inspector of Anakapalle Rural Police Station PV Narasimha Rao said that the deceased have been identified as K Anand (48), V Nookaraju (61), P Appa Rao (45) and V Manikyam (62) who died on Sunday while P Dora Babu who also consumed the spirit lost his final breath on Monday while he was availing treatment at KG Hospital in Vizag city.

Police said P Dora Babu has been admitted to KG Hospital for treatment. Doctors treating him said his condition is critical.

The incident occurred on Saturday when a group of seven persons organized a party and five of them consumed surgical spirit as they could not afford to buy liquor.

On Sunday morning, they started vomiting and developed other complications. While Anand died at his home, Nooka Raju was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Appa Rao and others were rushed to Anakapalle hospital. Later they were shifted to KG Hospital in Vizag city but died en route.

Police said Anand, who was working in a pharmaceutical company at the Parawada area in Vizag city, procured the spirit illegally. He along with his friends consumed it to get high.

Police have found an empty bottle of surgical spirit at the spot. “We have started the investigation to establish how they procured the surgical spirit. We have registered a case under section 174 of CrPC (unnatural deaths),” police said.
