Four under trial Covid +Ve prisoners flee from Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Four under trial prisoners, undergoing treatment for Covid-19 at the Gandhi Hospital, fled from the health facility in the early hours of Thursday. The prisoners who had been lodged at Cherlapally Central Prison had been moved to Gandhi Hospital, after they tested positive a few days ago.

They were under treatment in the prisoners’ ward in the new block of the hospital building. While this incident raised concerns among other inmates and staff in the hospital, questions on the preparedness of the security staff, including the police personnel, to check repetition of such incidents are aplenty.

The under trial prisoners who escaped include Prisoner No. 6624, who was arrested by the Tandur police of Vikarabad district in connection with a theft case and assault a few months ago. The second person is accused in a

robbery case registered at Rajendra Nagar police station of Cyberabad Commissionerate in the city. The other two prisoners were also arrested in similar cases under different police stations in the city.

It was learnt that all four of them first cut off the ventilator grills of the washroom attached to their ward and climbed down from the ward using ropes. The issue came to light on Thursday morning, when the security

staff were taking attendance of the inmates in the ward and alerted the higher officials immediately.

Chilkalguda police station was also informed and special teams were rushed to the spot. Police, along with clues teams, visited the prisoners’ ward and started a probe.
