Highway robbers hijack truck, loot mobiles worth Rs 6 Cr at AP-TN border

Chittoor, August 26: A gang of highway robbers waylaid a truck and looted mobile phones worth Rs 6 crore near Nagari along the Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu border.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when a truck carrying 15,000 mobile phones was on its way to Maharashtra from Sriperumbudur in Chennai of Tamil Nadu.

Police said robbers chased the vehicle from Sriperumbudu. They waylaid the truck when it entered Andhra Pradesh from Tamil Nadu.

Police said robbers thrashed the driver and forced him to get off the truck. They later hijacked the truck along with mobile phone consignment.

Based on the complaint from the driver of the truck, Andhra Pradesh police registered a case and formed a special team to trace the truck.

Police later found the truck abandoned along the Chennai-Tirupati highway.

However, robbers had decamped with half of the consignment. Police believe that the mobiles were shifted to another vehicle and driven away.

The investigation has revealed that the truck was carrying 15,000 mobile phones worth Rs 12 crore. The gang of robbers, who hijacked the truck, looted mobile phones worth Rs6 crore.

Police are examining the CCTV footage at few locations to identify the gang. Police are suspecting that the inter-state gang might be involved in the dacoity.
