Hyderabad woman claims husband gave her talaq for not delivering a male child

Hyderabad: Angered over his wife delivering a female child, a man divorced his wife by giving triple talaq in the Old City of Hyderabad. The issue, which happened in September, became known when the woman, Mehraj Begum, approached the police to file a case against her husband, Mohd Dastagiri, for giving her triple talaq. The Women Police Station in South Zone, Hyderabad registered a case and started a probe into the issue.

Mehraj, belonging to Secunderabad area, married Dastagiri in 2011. She had reportedly suffered a miscarriage a year and a half into her marriage. The woman told the police that her husband and in-laws started torturing her after the miscarriage. They allegedly abused her, stating that she cannot bear a child for the family. After a few years, she delivered a female child.

However, her in-laws didn’t stop the abuses even though Mehraj gave birth. The persecutions continued since she couldn’t give birth to a male child. Her husband and his parents refused to accept Mehraj and her child, and Mehraj’s in-laws forced the mother and her baby out of the house. While the abuses continued, the couple went for counselling and saw no reprieve.

Reportedly, on September 19, Dastagiri approached Mehraj, pronounced talaq thrice and told her that the relationship has ended. She alleged that Dastagiri threatened to harm her and the child if she did not leave his home peacefully. He also allegedly told her that he would marry another woman for the sake of a male child.

The police are currently investigating the issue.
