Hyderabad: Burglars break into University of Hyderabad, steal 50 laptops from CR Rao Institute

Hyderabad: Unidentified burglars broke into the University of Hyderabad campus and stole 50 laptops from a classroom at the CR Rao Institute on Sunday night, the police said on Tuesday.

The theft has triggered serious concerns, especially given the tight security arrangements at the Central University.

Break-in through rear window

According to police, the burglars gained entry by removing the iron grill of a rear window of the CR Rao Institute building. From there, they entered a classroom and made away with 50 laptops that were kept for students’ practical sessions.

Investigators found clear signs of forced entry, including the dismantled window grill.

Car used in the theft

Police also noticed tyre marks near the building, indicating that the suspects arrived and escaped in a car. Based on preliminary findings, officials believe more than one person may have been involved in executing the theft.

CCTV footage under scrutiny

CCTV cameras installed across the university campus are being examined to trace the movement of the suspects. Given the restricted access to the campus, police suspect that the theft may have involved someone familiar with the premises.

As part of the probe, details of staff and others working at the CR Rao Institute are being collected.

Laptops kept for student training

The stolen laptops were reportedly taken on lease for student practice and were placed in the classroom on Friday. As Saturday and Sunday were holidays, no students or faculty members visited the classroom during this period, which the thieves appear to have exploited.

Case registered, probe on

Despite strict entry controls that make it difficult for outsiders to access the campus, the incident has left university authorities and students shocked. Following a complaint, Gachibowli police registered a case and launched an investigation.

Confirming the same, Gachibowli Inspector Balaraju said efforts are underway to identify and nab the culprits at the earliest.
