Hyderabad: A 10 kg football-sized kidney tumor has been removed by doctors at a private hospital in Hyderabad, making it the first-ever such case in the Telugu states and the second instance in the country.

The 53-year-old patient, a resident of Kadapa, was referred to the hospital with abdominal swelling. During the examination, doctors discovered a big abdominal tumor. The mass was so big that it took up two-thirds of the abdominal cavity and pushed the intestines into the right lower region. The tumor was discovered to be growing from the left kidney via imaging.

Speaking about the patient's condition and subsequent treatment, Dr. Mallikarjuna C, a urologist, who performed the surgery, said, "Considering the size of the tumor, we ruled out robotic procedure and instead opted for open surgery. With great effort, the tumor could be removed successfully."

About tumor growth, Dr. Rajesh K. Reddy & Dr. Taif Bendigeri, the urologists who participated in a surgical procedure, explained, "There was swelling in the abdomen. Surprisingly, the patient did not notice it much or may have ignored it despite the pain."

"Our team removed the cancer-affected left kidney. Fortunately, it was found that the patient did not need additional therapy as the tumor had not spread to other organs," they added.

The tumor was found to be malignant upon microscopic examination post-surgery.
