Hyderabad: State govt authorities on Wednesday seized approximately 14 tonnes of decomposed meat from a storage facility in the Mangalhat area. The owner of the unit was taken into custody.
Mangalhat police, the Golconda Task Force, the H-FAST team and GHMC officials jointly conducted the shocking raid that has raised serious concerns over food safety in the city.
What did the officials find?
Acting on a tip-off, officials raided the premises of ‘A to Z Sheep & Goat Offals,’ in the Chisti Chaman Dargah area near RK Pet. During the inspection, they discovered a massive stockpile of spoiled meat stored in unhygienic conditions.
The proprietor, identified as 41-year-old Mohammad Afroz, was taken into custody.
Low-quality meat bought from other states
Preliminary investigations revealed that Afroz was sourcing low-quality and decomposed meat from states like Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, and Maharashtra at lower prices.
Many Hyderabad hotels buy the meat
The rotten stock was then transported to Hyderabad, stored, and allegedly supplied to several prominent hotels and restaurants across the city.
Officials noted that the accused had been operating this illegal supply chain for some time, putting public health at grave risk.
“We are committed to taking stringent action against those who endanger public health for profit,” officials stated following the raid. The entire stock of 14 tonnes was seized and destroyed to prevent it from reaching the market.
Authorities have registered a case and have launched a deeper investigation to identify the hotels and food outlets that were receiving this meat. They have also promised enhanced surveillance on meat supply chains entering the city.
