Hyderabad: The Hyderabad cyber crime police arrested two persons on Monday in a Rs. 15 lakh insurance fraud. The two had duped a Hyderabad woman by promising bonus on insurance policies.
The two have been identified as Devansh Rastogi (27) and Imran Khan (22) of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.. The police seized 10 mobile phones, five debit cards, passbooks and checkbooks from them.
On 5 March, the police received a complaint from an 80-year-old woman from Begumpet, Hyderabad. In October 2020, she had received a call from a man who introduced himself as Rajeev Agarwal, a clerk from Life Insurance Company. He convinced her to take four insurance policies by promising a huge bonus.
Later, he collected Rs. 15,37,622 from her as processing fee and other charges to claim the bonus. However, even after paying the money she neither received the bonus nor her insurance policy amount even as the fraudsters kept demanding more. She realized she had been cheated and approached the police.
The police have warned people against transferring funds in response to online fraudsters who pretend that they are calling from reputed insurance companies.
