22 indie puppies find homes at GHMC’s second adoption drive at KBR Park
Hyderabad: A total of 22 indie puppies were adopted by animal lovers at the second edition of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) Indie Puppy Adoption Mela held at KBR Park on Sunday.
First puppy went to Shaikpet resident
The mela was inaugurated by GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, who stressed the importance of encouraging citizens to welcome desi puppies into their families. The GHMC, in its release, said that 35 dewormed and vaccinated puppies were presented for adoption at the event, of which 22 found new homes.
The commissioner personally handed over the first puppy to Chinkakunta Raju, a resident of Shaikpet who came forward for adoption.

Indigenous dog breeds highlighted
Speaking at the mela, Commissioner Karnan described indigenous breeds as ‘resilient, intelligent, low-maintenance, and deeply loyal.’
He added that adoption drives such as these play a key role in promoting compassion while addressing issues related to stray dog populations.

Expansion of adoption melas
Following the response from citizens, Karnan announced that similar adoption melas will be held across all GHMC zonal circles.
“The idea is not only to facilitate adoptions but also to nurture compassion, reduce street dog populations, and restore dignity to lives often overlooked,” the Commissioner said.

Aim of the initiative
According to GHMC officials, the Indie Puppy Adoption Mela seeks to:
• Encourage families to adopt indie dogs rather than purchase pets.
• Create awareness of responsible pet care.
Provide a safe, healthy start for puppies through vaccination and deworming.
The civic body plans to continue such initiatives to ensure sustainable adoption practices and greater acceptance of indigenous dogs among urban households.
