300 kg decomposed goat meat seized in Hyderabad; trader arrested

Hyderabad: Around 300 kilograms of rotten meat were seized by Mangalhat police in a major crackdown on the sale of unhygienic food products.

A 41-year-old trader was arrested for allegedly selling long-stored and decomposed goat and sheep offal to unsuspecting customers by falsely claiming it was fresh and hygienic.

GHMC and food safety officials raid shop

Acting on credible inputs, a joint team from Mangalhat Police Station, Task Force (Golconda Zone), GHMC officials and the Food Adulteration team conducted a raid on March 10 at a shop operating under the name ‘A to Z Sheep & Goat Offals’ at RK Pet, Chisti Chaman Dargah, Mangalhat.

The accused, Mohammed Afroz alias Afroz (41), a resident of Amar Nagar Colony, Mangalhat, was apprehended during the operation.

Meat stored in highly unhygienic conditions

During inspection of the premises, officials found large quantities of goat and sheep offal stored in deep freezers and plastic tubs filled with stagnant water. Authorities stated that the meat had been stored for prolonged periods to delay decomposition and suppress foul smell.

Approximately 300 kilograms of decomposed offal were identified and seized. GHMC officials took custody of the seized material for safe disposal as per prescribed norms.

Storing decomposing meat to sell it off as fresh

According to police, the accused procured goat and sheep meat/offal in bulk at low prices from states including Karnataka, Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir. He allegedly stored the meat for extended durations and later sold it to customers by misrepresenting it as fresh and hygienic.

Police said the accused endangered public health and cheated innocent consumers for wrongful financial gain.

Officials revealed that the accused was previously involved in a similar offence and had been fined by GHMC authorities.

A case has been registered under Crime No. 102/2026 under Sections 125, 271, and 318(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigation is ongoing.

Public advisory

Police have urged citizens not to purchase meat or food items from unauthorised or unhygienic outlets and to report any such illegal activities to authorities immediately.

Further investigation is underway.
