300 wards, 300 corporators: Telangana approves GHMC reorganization for efficient civic governance

Hyderabad: Telangana government has approved the reorganisation of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

The redesigned GHMC will have 300 wards. The strength of elected representatives will also be doubled.

The move comes after the civic body’s jurisdiction was extended up to the Telangana Core Urban Region (T-CUR).

Expansion triggers ward refixation

The decision follows the recent merger of 20 municipalities and seven municipal corporations located within and beyond the Outer Ring Road (ORR) into the GHMC limits. With this, the civic body’s geographical spread has expanded from about 650 sq km to over 2,000 sq km, necessitating a complete redrawing of ward boundaries.

Government issues GO 266

The government issued GO No. 266 through the GHMC Department in coordination with the Metropolitan Area Urban Development Authority. Before finalising the reorganisation, the Centre for Good Governance (CGG) conducted a detailed study on administrative restructuring. Based on this, the GHMC Commissioner submitted a comprehensive report, which was examined and approved by the government.

300 Corporators in the new setup

With the increase in wards, the GHMC will now have 300 corporators, elected on a one-member-per-ward basis. Until now, GHMC functioned with 150 wards, 30 circles, and six zones within its earlier limits.

More Zones and Circles on the cards

Officials said the expanded GHMC is likely to be administered through up to 10 zones and nearly 50 circles to ensure efficient civic governance across the enlarged urban region.

Public objections to be invited

Following the government orders, the GHMC Commissioner will invite objections and suggestions on the proposed ward delimitation. A formal notification seeking public feedback is expected to be issued on Tuesday or Wednesday.
