346 people jailed in drunk driving cases in five days

The prosecution of persons caught drunk driving and driving without a licence started from 19 to 23 July. Around 353 persons were sent to prison for drunk driving and driving without a license.

346 people jailed in drunk driving cases in five days

Hyderabad: In a span of five days, 346 persons were jailed in drunk driving cases registered by the Cyberabad traffic police.

The prosecution of persons caught drunk driving and driving without a licence started from 19 to 23 July. Around 353 persons were sent to prison for drunk driving and driving without a license. The licences of all persons involved in drunk driving are being sent to the Regional Transport Offices concerned for suspension. A total of 928 cases have been disposed of during the period.

It is to be noted that post-lockdown, the Cyberabad police have imposed strict checking for various traffic violations.

Drunk driving cases

As per the Motor Vehicles Act, driving by a drunken person or by a person under the influence of drugs is punishable for the first offense with imprisonment for a term of up to six months and/or with a fine which may extend to Rs. 2,000.

According to the data provided by the Cyberabad police, around 589 cases have been disposed of during the prosecution and 346 persons sent to prison. Also, around Rs. 20,82,600 fine was imposed. Out of the total 346 imprisonments, 121 people were imprisoned for a day, 93 for two days, 46 persons for three days, 25 persons for five days, and 15 for six days. Meanwhile, nine persons each were sent to prison for seven and eight days, one for nine days, two persons for 10 days, two for 11 days, five for 12 days, one for 16 days, and one each for 14, 16, 17, 18, and 20 days.

The highest number of cases were imposed in Shadnagar (95), followed by Kukatpally (80), Rajendranagar (71), and Alwal (70).

Driving without licences

Around 298 cases of driving without a licence were disposed of during the period in which Rs. 11,14, 200 fine was collected and around seven people convicted. Out of the seven, five were imprisoned for a day, one for two days, and one for three days. Six people were from Gachibowli and one from Rajendranagar.

The highest number of cases were disposed of in Jeedimetla (52) followed by Shamsabad (47) and Rajendranagar (42).

Four cases of driving while using cellphones were disposed of and a total fine of Rs. 11,100 collected. Also, 37 cases of minor driving were disposed of and a fine of Rs. 23,000 collected.
