Hyderabad: With the reopening of the four roads, the Cantonment residents can now breathe a sigh of relief and look forward to better connectivity and accessibility.

In a significant relief to the residents of Secunderabad Cantonment, the Local Military Authority (LMA) reopened four of the six arterial roads that had remained inaccessible to civilians for years. The walls were broken yesterday night. The move comes after the Ministry of Defence (MoD) issued orders on 20 April to reopen the roads, namely Richardson Road, Protnee Road, Byam Road, and Ammuguda Road.

“It’s a great day for us as we finally have our roads back,” said C.S. Chandrashekar, secretary of the Federation of Northern-Eastern Colonies of Secunderabad. “We have been fighting for this for over six years, and we thank everyone who supported our cause,” he added.

The decision to reopen the roads was made by a special Defence committee that was constituted to look into the road closure issue. The committee agreed to reopen two Class-C Cantonment roads and two other roads on Army (A-1Defence) land for civilians.

“It’s a great relief for lakhs of people living in Alwal, Bolaram, Yapral, and Malkajgiri who have better access now to Rajiv Rahadari. We thank the Ministry of Defence for giving instructions to the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) and the LMA to reopen these important roads,” said B.T. Srinivasan, general secretary of the United Federation of Resident Welfare Associations.
