Hyderabad: A preterm baby weighing 710 grams was born at 24 weeks in a city hospital here. The baby was discharged after 118 days when it weighed 2.1 kg. A 24-week pregnant woman came to the hospital with complaints of severe abdominal pain and profuse bleeding. An emergency delivery was planned as both the mother and child were at risk.
A normal delivery was carried out as the condition of the mother was severe. The baby, weighing 710 gm, was given prompt medical attention and breathing support in an incubator.
After 10 days, he was taken out of the ventilator and given CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). After a few weeks, the pressure was slowly reduced allowing the baby to breathe normally.
The baby developed infections that were diagnosed and treated. He required a few blood transfusions to manage anaemia. In addition to this, he developed newborn jaundice and was treated with phototherapy. The baby also had a heart defect (PDA) and bleeding in the brain that was treated.
The baby was discharged after 118 days in the hospital.
Dr. Ravinder Reddy Parige, the HOD of neonatology and paediatrics, said, "Skilled nursing staff and doctors and state-of-the-art level 3 intensive care helped meet the challenges."
