Hyderabad: Stormwater drains must be cleared before the rains says HYDRAA chief Ranganath
Hyderabad: As Hyderabad braces for the upcoming monsoon season, HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath said that they have stepped up efforts to assess and address flood risks in the city after heavy rain lashed various parts of the city on Tuesday.
Focus on clearing and expanding stormwater drains
The commissioner on Wednesday visited locations where waterlogging was reported and reviewed the condition of stormwater drains, many of which were found to be silted and obstructed. He also examined ongoing efforts to clear the drains and inspected the bypass channels being dug to manage excess rainwater more effectively.
Widening of drains to prevent future flooding
Stressing the need for long-term flood mitigation, Ranganath instructed officials to widen existing drains so that rainwater can flow freely without stagnating on road surfaces. āStormwater must be diverted efficiently through the drainage network to avoid repeat flooding,ā he said.
GHMC, NHAI officials consulted
During his visit to Ramachandrapuram, the commissioner sought explanations from GHMC and National Highways authorities regarding persistent water stagnation in the area. He also inspected the Railway Under Bridge (RUB) near Surabhi Colony between Chandanagar and Lingampally stations, another frequent trouble spot during rains.
Upstream water flow identified as major concern
GHMC officials informed the commissioner that flood waters from Gopi Cheruvu and Chakali Cheruvu, along with runoff from upstream areas, are contributing to the recurring inundation. They noted that the ongoing expansion of box drains is expected to significantly ease the problem this monsoon season.
Instructions issued for drain maintenance
To ensure smooth water flow, Ranganath directed civic officials to keep all drains free from garbage and blockages. He stressed that regular maintenance and pre-monsoon readiness are crucial to minimising the risk of urban flooding.
