AIMIM wins 7 out of 9 seats; retains hold over old city

Hyderabad: The AIMIM party will continue to rule in its bastion – the Old City of Greater Hyderabad – as it retained all its seven seats. AIMIM contested outside Old City in two seats Rajendranagar and Jublieee Hills too for the 2023 Telangana State Assembly Elections.

The All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen party, spearheaded by barrister Asaduddin Owaisi and his younger brother Akbaruddin Owaisi, won in Nampally, Charminar, Karwan, Bahadurpura, Yakutpura, Chandrayangutta and Malakpet. However, they came third and fourth places in Jubilee Hills and Rajender Nagar respectively.

This time, the party will be represented by three first-time MLAs, though they earlier served as elected representatives in different capacities. AIMIM has a vote share of 2.18 per cent in Telangana.

Table

Nampally - Majid Hussain (Mehdipatnam GHMC corporator)

Charminar - Mir Zulfekar Ali (former mayor)

Karwan - Kausar Mohiuddin (struck a Hat-trick with the win)

Bahadurpura - Mohammed Mubeen

Yakutpura - Jaffar Hussain (Nampally MLA and 3-time MLA)

Chandrayangutta - Akbaruddin Owaisi (6th time MLA)

Malakpet - Ahmed bin Abdullah Balala (4th time MLA)

Charminar

AIMIM’s Mir Zulfekar Ali, a former mayor, secured victory in the Charminar constituency obtaining 49,002 votes. The 15th round of counting solidified his lead, maintaining an advantage of around 22,858 votes over the nearest contender.

Megha Rani Agarwal of the BJP secured the second position with 26,144 votes, while Mohammed Mujeebullah Shareef of the Congress party closely followed in third place with 10,566 votes. The Charminar Assembly Constituency recorded a 43.26 per cent voter turnout during the 2023 elections.

AIMIM’s winning streak in Charminar in 2023 has continued from its victory of Mumtaz Ahmed Khan in 2018 and Syed Pasha Quadri’s win in 2014. This electoral trend underscores the enduring political legacy of the AIMIM in the region, emphasising its uninterrupted representation in Charminar for over six decades.

Mir was elected in 1986 for the first time as a corporator and was subsequently made the mayor for a year.

In 2000, he also contested the Assembly election from Asif Nagar but lost. He is known to be a party loyalist and an old-time party worker who got the ticket this time and has been elected as the MLA for the first time.

Nampally

Leading in majority seats in Telangana, Congress is poised to take control. The battle for the Nampally seat rages on, as Feroz Khan and AIMIM’s Majid Hussain fight tooth and nail for victory. After seven rounds, Majid secured 27,571 votes, whereas Feroz Khan secured 19,128 votes, with 14 rounds remaining.

The Nampally constituency has been a stronghold of the AIMIM in the last two Assembly elections. However, the Congress party has been determined to win over the people of the constituency.

AIMIM’s Majid Hussain, a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), corporator of the GHMC from Mehdipatnam, was formerly a mayor of the erstwhile state of Andhra Pradesh in 2012. He replaced incumbent Jaffar Hussain Meraj, who defeated Feroz Khan in 2018 in the Nampally constituency and was moved to Yakutpura after Pasha Qadri was seated by the party.

Feroz Khan has been a strong contender for the seat. However, he lost to AIMIM’s Meraj by 15,000 votes in the last election. Since 2009, Khan has lost the seat three times.

In the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, the voter turnout in Nampally Assembly Constituency was recorded at 42.76 per cent.

Yakutpura

The Yakutpura Assembly Constituency is currently witnessing a tug of war between Jaffar Hussain of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) candidate Amjed Ullah Khan. The margin between the two candidates is 878 votes.

After 21 rounds of the total 25, Jaffar Hussain secured 46,153 votes, whereas Amjed Ullah Khan secured 45,275 votes. Earlier, the constituency was represented by AIMIM leader Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri who was denied a ticket by the party this time.

In the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, the voter turnout in Yakutpura Assembly Constituency was recorded at 39.69 per cent.

Notably, the electoral dominance of AIMIM in Hyderabad is exemplified by its consistent stronghold on the Charminar Assembly constituency. Led by Asaduddin Owaisi, the AIMIM has retained its influence in Charminar and other seats in Hyderabad’s Old City since the 1967 Assembly polls.

Jubilee Hills

Jubilee Hills, the AIMIM is in the fourth position as it polled 7258 votes.

In Rajendranagar the AIMIM candidate is in the fourth position as it polled 25,670 votes.
